When the Horse Enters the Dream
The horse has long occupied a place somewhere between the earthly and the ethereal. Its strength is tangible, yet there is something about its presence that lends itself naturally to mystery — an intuition, grace and quiet majesty that artists and storytellers have returned to for centuries. At The Mieko Gallery, it is this duality that fascinates us: the horse can be grounded and immensely powerful, while possessing an almost otherworldly beauty.
Christian Dior captured this beautifully in its archived Spring 2021 Haute Couture collection. The house created an elaborate dream world through Le Château du Tarot, a fantasy film directed by Matteo Garrone. Within its theatrical setting, the white horse appears almost as an apparition — serene and statuesque beside the intricacy of the couture. Rather than functioning simply as a backdrop, its presence brings another dimension to the image: strength beside delicacy, nature beside craftsmanship, and something timeless beside the contemporary.
It is an image that reminds us why fashion continues to return to the horse. There are qualities that cannot quite be manufactured through fabric, styling or scenery alone. The horse brings its own beauty to the frame — and, with it, a spirit that remains entirely its own.

St Tropez-Gassin Set for a Decisive League of Nations Showdown
The Longines League of Nations™ arrives on the French Riviera on 20 September for the fourth and final qualifier of the 2026 season. Against the setting of Haras de Gassin, ten nations will compete for eight places in next month’s Final in Barcelona — with Germany already secure at the top of the standings and Great Britain arriving as defending champions after their dramatic victory in Rotterdam.
The real tension sits further down the table. Belgium currently holds the eighth and final qualifying position on 165 points, with Italy just five points behind and the Netherlands another five back. France, Switzerland, Ireland, Brazil and the United States remain in the mix, bringing some of the sport’s leading riders to one final afternoon where a single placing could reshape the road to Barcelona. On the Côte d’Azur, the setting may be glamorous, but the equation is simple: ten nations, eight places, one final chance.

The Art of Presence
There are many ways to command a room. Some are expressed through dress, posture and ceremony; others require almost nothing at all. The horse has an extraordinary ability to hold our attention through presence alone — through the way it stands, observes and responds to the world around it. There is no urgency to this authority. It simply exists.
This is part of what makes the horse such a compelling presence in portraiture. Alongside fashion, costume and theatricality, it introduces something instinctive and alive. The relationship is not one of competition, but contrast: human imagination meets the natural character of the horse, and each seems to heighten the beauty of the other.
Tim Walker's 2017 portrait of Claire Foy for Vogue captures that relationship beautifully. Foy's poised, theatrical silhouette and the quiet strength of the black horse create a portrait that feels at once cinematic and timeless. Neither disappears into the other; together, they create the story.
